So I've been here nearly a week and I honestly haven't felt like a tourist until my sister arrived on Thursday night. All week I've lived a normal Hawaiian life... at least I think it's been normal. Just working on weddings and getting my name out there, cooking my meals from home, and occasionally heading out to get a nice cup of coffee from the local coffee shops. I have even made myself familiar with the Post Office here in Captain Cook, HI.

But now that Angie has arrived we are jumping from one free event to the next! Today we are going to King Kameamea's Parade celebrating his birthday (which was this past Thursday). It should be pretty great. I've been looking forward to it all week long.

Anyway, time is running short and I've gotta eat some breakfast before we leave! I will let you know how it goes...

Once again I had the opportunity to shoot a wedding with Mrs. Becky Fisher of Becky Fisher Photography. It was great being able to back her up and capture some images of this beautiful wedding. The location was pretty incredible. The whole wedding was held at The Turnip Rose and it was fantastic. Very organized, excellent service, superb food, and fine dining. All around the day was amazing. Congratulations Elliot & Jennifer! May your years together be unforgettable.

I'm down here in Huntington staying at my friends Nick and Becky's condo. Becky and I are shooting a wedding this afternoon and it should be pretty great! Sadly, it is Becky's oldest daughter's birthday today. She is turning three. Yesterday the celebrated with her and right now they are out on a walk enjoying each other.

I'm here listening to Pastor Britt Merrick speak on eleven verses in Hebrews. Pretty powerful stuff I tell ya.

Anyhow, it's about that time to get cleaned up! I'm planning on posting some pictures of the day sometime this week.

Oh, and hey, if it's your birthday week then I hope it's wonderful! It's my birthday week as well and I pray it's full of laughter not only for me, but for you too.

Harder Three

So my friend Jake and Renee along with their daughter Gracie will be moving to Guatemala in just under two weeks! They are following the Lord's calling in their life and will be planting a church down there. Their son, Josiah, will come along in August! What an amazing and exciting adventure.

I was so pleased that they asked me to take their family picture while they were still in town. Gracie just turned two in April and she is quite a character. She's a tiny yet tall little thing. It was a joy to shoot them and spend some time with them this morning.

Navarro Wedding

JC and Natalie... what a blessing to have met them. Well, Natalie and I go back a few years. I was her Lead Counselor at Hume Lake Christian Camps back in 2003. We have kept in semi-contact since that week she attended camp. Thankfully she asked me to shoot her wedding! Meeting JC and watching them interact with each other, their bridal party, and their guests was incredible. They both are so giving and it is very clear they each have a servants heart.

Needless to say, their wedding was amazing. It was fun, full of laughter and love, and JC and Natalie had such a great time... probably because they were so relaxed and truly enjoyed themselves.

Back before I graduated from Brooks Institute I had the opportunity to Intern for Tim and Cheryl Halberg, Halberg Photographers. They asked me to come along and shoot a friends wedding. It was a pretty great wedding even though the ceremony had to be relocated from Hillcrest Christmas Tree Farm to inside Reedley First Baptist Church. New York has come to an end and I'm slowly on my way home to California. Let me tell you, New York was an experience. Interning for Richard Pierce was probably one of the best decisions I've ever made. He is truly amazing and the staff that I worked with were a ton of fun. You can check out Richard's images at his Rep's website... his work is under ca1 - Richard Pierce.

I just wanted to show a few images that I shot while in New York. I shot them with my little Canon point and shoot that my parents gave me for my 30 birthday. If you know me at all you'd know that I'm a bit of a chicken and I wasn't brave enough to carry around my nice camera due to fear of getting mugged. My next trip to New York hopefully will be in better weather so I will be a bit more brave... I hope.

It was just so great to be there, relax, eat, laugh, and enjoy life. Brad and Heather Newbold had a housewarming for the new home and it was a hit. Sunday morning we woke up to snow and I couldn't believe how freezing it was! We were going to go on a hike but instead we stayed in, drank hot chocolate and coffee, sat by the fire, watched a movie, and bundled up in blankets. It was just your typical day at the Newbolds. I loved it.

Kevin & Kristin's Engagement in Santa Monica

After getting my black eye this past Saturday morning, I headed to Santa Monica to meet up with Kevin and Kristin for their Engagement shoot. I'll be honest, I was a bit out of it (I did smash my head into a counter top and all) but I enjoyed myself and I think the pictures turned out rather well. This couple certainly are creative and fun to be around. I'm so thankful that I got to be apart of this day and I look forward to being apart of their wedding.

Big Set

So we shot Big Set... built it, did everything, bought the props, the clothing, found these amazing models, and shot the sucker. It turned out pretty good... It's still in the editing stages but here's a preliminary of it. Not bad eh?

Commercialization

So this week was an attempt to commercialize our style of shooting in a series of three images. Trick is, we had to use one of our past images from our Self Promotion assignment and then build off that image to create two other images that can go into the commercial market. Anyhow, here is my attempt. I like the images, I hope it works for this assignment. We shall see!

Last Friday September 12th I had the opportunity of driving up to beautiful Galt and shooting a friend of a friends wedding. It was pretty great and the couple were beautiful! Well, I've been working hard, getting clients, creating presets for Lightroom, doing business stuff, keeping on my laundry, exercising, letting my neck and spine go so that now it's in the pinched nerve state. Dumb me.

Let me see though... what's new? JenniferEileen.com is all updated and fresh with my new logo. I have split my companies into two. Jennifer Eileen and Jennifer Eileen Imaging. I have to get working on my JEimaging website. I now have a place to post prints for people to view and order one or a ton of them. There is a link to the photocart inside my website. Um... I finally purchased my Fictitious Name Statement now I have to publish it and purchase my business license so I can open a business bank account.

I am traveling this weekend. Kind of dreading it due to the pain in my neck and upper back as well as gas prices and strain on my little Geo (who is a rockstar with 218,585 miles on it). I've been contemplating donating my vehicle for a tax write off and purchasing a different vehicle. What makes me nervous about that is the Geo's gas mileage is off the hook where another vehicle won't match that so I'll end up paying more for gas. But, a new car will have things that I'd like: a door handle so I can get in and out of my car much more easily, a radio so I won't have to carry around my trusty boombox, and lining on the ceiling that won't be drooping down. Gosh, those sound like good perks. But seriously, I can live with those things as long as I'm saving cash by not spending at the gas pumps.

Whatever.

Things are well. I'm learning, growing, being challenged daily, and looking forward to the wedding season to be up and running so I can start paying off my student loans!

Thanks Brooks for taking all my money for the next 30 years.

Engagements of Best Friends

Becky and Chris came to Reedley this weekend. So great to see them! We went out, took pictures around Reedley, laughed a ton, even went to Hume Lake on Sunday to show Chris the wonders of it all. Beloved Stephanie joined us and a new, fun friend Marco came out to spend the night as well. So joyful, so refreshing, so fun.

Just some thoughts...

I've had a lot on my mind over these past few weeks. I've been working hard, trying to make sure I'm covering all of my "business" ventures but I keep feeling like I'm drowning. See, I have to purchase this and that (ie business license, etc.) but with what money? My clients keep canceling so obviously I'm doing something wrong, but what??? And now, I fear that two more clients are going to cancel because I haven't heard back from them for over a week concerning the contracts I sent. (And the contracts stated all the things we had covered and agreed upon.) So what am I missing? Personality? Small feet? I just don't know!

So now I keep having to face each day, working from my home, wishing I were around people. I keep contemplating getting a part time job but where? Reedley is not really full of fruitful businesses to work for a few hours a week. Volunteering? Definitely a possibility but again, the question of where?

I feel vulnerable, nervous, sick to my stomach when I think of the money that I so willingly borrowed and now owe back (plus interest). What's gonna happen? I just don't know.

Thankfully, the Lord ALWAYS provides. Right now I feel in a dark place and I feel alone but I keep having to remind myself that I'm not actually alone, someone is there with me while I roam around in this darkness. And light will be at the end of the tunnel and all of the unknowns will fall into place... always does.

So through this I praise God! I praise Him for these struggles, for the unknown, for the trials, for the lack of money and the need for it in order to accomplish all this business stuff, and I simply praise Him for creating me, loving me, dying for me, and allowing me to call Him Father.

Today I got to shoot some friends of mine from Carp who are expecting a little boy in June. I had a great time but whenever you're getting pictures taken it always feels sort of awkward until after an hour or two when you don't even realize the camera is there. But I think we got some great shots and it was so good to see both Tim and Jess again.

I realized that I haven't posted ANYTHING since I was at home over Christmas Break. So, let's see... the children here are more wonderful everyday and I am going to miss them so incredibly much. Lots and lots of funny things happen. I really should write them down.

But this is what we're here for... pictures right? These are from my class. It's been so fun and I love what I can capture with the use of technology. So there are pictures from a drop tank, splashes, as well as spills, and two that we really threw into the air and took pictures of.

Halloween

We survived, as did the kids. Spending Halloween at the Moore's house everyone enjoyed chili and chicken noodle soup, a very nice pairing, before heading out to four different houses to trick or treat. The kids were simply adorable. In the company of Tiger and Little Roo as well as Princess Belle, another Princess (I'm really not sure which one... oh, I was just informed she was Princess Fiona, I should have known), two Spiderman's, a Flower, and a Ladybug the adults joyfully tagged along through the dark cul-de-sacs hoping that the kids would score some delicious candies for them to eat. The evening ended with a movie showing on the garage door. Just like the good ol' days of drive-in theaters. All in all, Halloween was a treat.

Well, I went to Hume. It was a quiet 24 hours although the first few hours were wonderful being spent with my very pregnant friend Monica and her husband Adam. The following day was the quiet day. It was so strange to be there and have no close friends around. I really enjoyed taking pictures though, but that was done at night so I had to wait for the day to pass. Thanks to the McWatters I enjoyed their home and flat screen TV. Thank you McWatters, thank you.

I got the opportunity to work with Becky Fisher, a dear friend and photographer from Huntington Beach. We shot at Redondo Beach and I have been able to use some of my images for my photo class. So here is one of them... I had to convert it to black and white and bring back some of the color. Oooooo... exciting.

By the way, it's an assignment for class but I think I like how it turned out even though the subject matter has been done before and you've probably seen this picture everywhere you turn. Oh well, at least it's mine.

Everyone needs a nice light. Another shot for the shooting assignment 'color on white'. Alas, I really like the outcome of this image. I just want to shoot open, negative space. Empty. Clean. Simple. Space.

I shot a few things today, wasn't much inspired. I have ideas shooting through my mind but all are so big and grand that I would actually need some money to make these dreams a reality. So, here it is... my color on black image for class. It's fine, but part of me thinks it's nothing special.

So I haven't told one person about this new blog yet look who finds me, Tim Halberg. How does he do that?

I'm so tremendously happy that 203 is over. What a relief and a breath of fresh air. All week long ('tis break week if ya don't know) I have slept, read, taken naps, enjoyed good food, and not done much else as of yet. But today is going to be a pretty active day: getting the car smogged, visiting friend after friend in Fresno, and cap the night off with Survivor and Grey's... sounds good to me.

Time for breakfast.

Yup, this is all new to me. Blogging, who'da thunk I'd start my own? Well, probably most people would have figured that out for me but by myself, I would have disregarded this type of thing quickly. But I've had some inspiration, Tim Halberg's blog is pretty fantastic so why not join his encouragement and brilliance and start my own?

Anyhow, today I've got to do some candid shooting and practice, practice, practice. And perhaps, just perhaps I might get to go to Ireland. We'll see what the Lord has in mind...
